How it came about
Home Inventory came from an ordinary problem: having information about what is in the house without a convenient way to find and maintain it. A list only helps if it tells me what something is, how much there is and where to look.
The site gives that work a more playful home. Cabinet Quest, Loft Quest and Cleaning Quest divide the interface into recognisable areas. The front door is deliberately simple: choose the part of the house, then go to the relevant inventory.
The difficult part
The challenge was to improve the presentation while preserving the existing information. Items that look similar may be different records. A quantity or location can matter even when it makes the data less neat. Cleaning up the interface must not become an excuse to delete or combine things without evidence.
Navigation matters here too. A page can be technically present but effectively hidden if the route from the home screen is unclear. I wanted the structure to make finding something easier, not create a collection of disconnected mini-apps.
What I learnt
I have learnt that visual personality and dependable record keeping can sit together. The playful names make the tool more inviting, but the value still comes from being able to trust the contents.
The scale of the problem has helped keep the design focused. I should be able to open the site, choose an area and find what I need. The playful presentation has a purpose if it makes that ordinary task more inviting and easier to return to.
