How it came about
The Stories of Ralph is a different kind of build from a research dashboard. It is an illustrated storybook site centred on a recurring cast and a gentle adventure. The experience depends on the reader recognising the same world from one page to the next.
The project brings together story structure, illustrations and a digital reading interface. It also explores how the book is presented and accessed, while keeping the hosted collection private.
The difficult part
The challenge was consistency across the whole book. An illustration can work beautifully by itself and still be wrong for the sequence if a character changes appearance, scale or clothing. Looking at a handful of attractive images does not establish that the complete book holds together.
I have had to review the artwork as a set and keep a clearer specification for the cast. The reader and delivery flow need similar attention: the experience should feel like opening a book, while access and purchase states remain understandable.
What I learnt
I have learnt to judge creative work both page by page and across the whole sequence. A style guide is useful only if I actually check the finished work against it.
It has also been a reminder that the feeling of a book depends on small details. Recognisable characters and a comfortable reading rhythm matter throughout the sequence. I want the illustrations, page transitions and reader controls to help someone stay with the story, rather than draw attention away from it.
